My work functions by recognizing the complexities in representation. This process has been my attempt to understand, challenge and engage others in the preconceptions of Mexican identity in the US, specific to women like myself and my mother. My most recent body of work, Latina, sets a stage in which preconceived notions of Latin and American culture collide. These characters claim the ironic, uncomfortable and humorous ways in which color, objects and the female body are consumed and displayed within an American context. They suggests an absurdity that comes with popular culture, as I emulate and mock these affiliations through a female perspective. Having been raised between both cultures, the women in my immediate family and myself carry out the characters created. They challenge and speak to the prejudices we face as Latinas living in the US, while celebrating our culture and strength through resilience.
